26 November Constitution Day

Constitution Day or Samvidhan Diwas is celebrated annually in India on 26 November.

The day is also known as National Law Day.

The day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution in India.

On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India that came into force on 26 January 1950.

While on 26 November, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect from 1950.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 19 November, 2015, notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate 26 November as 'Constitution Day'.

The day is celebrated to promote Constitution values among citizens.

History of how the Constitution of India came into being:

The two-month period between the adoption and enforcement of the Constitution was used for a thorough reading and translation from English to Hindi.

The Constituent Assembly met for 166 days spread over two years, 11 months and 18 days before the Constitution was adopted.

The members of the Constituent Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution of India became the law of the land.
